Yoga & Meditation Community
“A retreat should always be in our life, in our heart.
Even you go for retreat in body, the mind should always be in retreat, so that you’re able to practice each moment in your life.”

~ Dilgo Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche

Calabria South Italy

Located on the Ionian coast of Southern Italy, between the Sila National Park and the Marine Reserve of Isola Capo Rizzuto, the Shala Mandala is a contemplative retreat space immersed in Mediterranean nature within the Borgo degli Ulivi Resort.

Surrounded by olive groves, maritime pines, eucalyptus trees, and sea light, the centre offers dedicated spaces for yoga, meditation, study, and shared community life only a short walk from the beach.

We welcome both individuals and families seeking an environment that supports practice, rest, simplicity, and connection with nature, while maintaining comfort, warmth, and attentive hospitality.

Class in the shala

The Shala was designed according to principles inspired by Vāstu Śāstra, integrating natural light, geometry, symmetry, and spatial orientation to create an environment that supports balance, concentration, and contemplative practice.

Shala is More than a Studio

Every summer, the Shala receives a diverse community of students, from first-time practitioners to long-established students, as well as families with kids.

We try hard to ensure that everyone who comes to practice with us feels welcome and comfortable.

Class Time:  Shala doors open from Monday to Saturday from 7:00 am till 10:00 am (latest arrival 8.45 am). Practitioners are required to start on a Monday and finish on Saturday. The opening mantra begins around 7:00 am.

Sunday is a family day for us so the Shala will be closed.

New and Full Moon are observed so we won’t practice astānga.

Practice welcomes those who arrive with sincerity

Our surroundings

Set directly in front of the Ionian coast, the Shala Mandala is surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, palm and fruit trees, sea light, and open landscapes shaped by the atmosphere of Southern Calabria.

The natural environment creates a quiet and spacious setting for practice, rest, study, and shared daily life. Alongside the practice program, guests can spend time by the sea, receive massage treatments, explore the surrounding cultural landscape, or simply experience a slower rhythm connected to nature and community.

Meals are inspired by Mediterranean and vegetarian traditions, with seasonal ingredients, simple preparation, and a focus on balance, nourishment, and conviviality.
